Campaign Against Pollution in Taytay, Rizal

It was just last year of December of 2010 when there was a meeting held in the nearby Barangay Hall in Dolores Taytay,Rizal headed by our beloved Chairman June Macabuhay and his team. I’ve never really been interested with this kind of meeting since it is almost always a meeting at least quarterly depending on the topics they want to talk to. I just ask my neighbor to tell me what it is all about. I thought this is one of those boring meeting about a fund raising campaign that we are encouraged to attend so that we will be the one to buy the tickets again. Those things were already set in my mind that’s why I never really cared to join especially those holiday season where people are reluctant to throw away money for the celebration. This is a good opportunity that the barangay officers would not want to miss. My impression was highly negative.
Until one time I ask my neighbors why are they always attending such meeting? It was then that I realized they are taught about “Anti pollution and household management” a campaign against the ever emerging trends of socio economic class that dwell with a systematic approach in dealing with garbage collection and saving for the family. I was then fascinated by the topics so I really need to attend.
My first day of meeting we were taught about the importance of garbage collection and how we can help minimize the garbage on the street by segregation and where are we going to throw away those junks that is still useful. We are also taught about recycling and reusing products that is not much of value but still important. This time it will be the barangay chairman who have assigned a location to collect such garbage’s like bottles, plastics and newspapers with a reasonable price so that the people can sell their merchandise as well as the barangay will sell these items to their contractors to have funds and more so; there will be less garbage collection and clean community. This is a good approach to eliminate waste where people earn and learn about their waste disposal behavior. Basically this good news should be spread widely to our barangay and this will be our role upon attending the meeting to do it purposely within the community, we will serve the barangay as a role model.
Convincingly enough little by little, people in our barangay started to segregate their trashes with different items, some are sold in the assigned location and some garbage’s are simply bought by contractor directly to their plant. In my case instead of selling our junk to the peddling “Magbobote” or the garbage buyer we are selling it directly to the barangay which have a higher priced and well rounded people who simply know the items they are buying. Selling this garbage like bottles and newspapers in the barangay is our way of helping the community to raise funds and we always do it every time we have collected enough of these items.
Three months later about March of 2011the reported collection of funds coming from garbage are divided together for community services and one of these are the fogging machineries that they have bought. This machine will be used to clean up the community by killing the mosquito’s and their niches and so it does. Although the fogging machine sounds like a machine gun to us and the chemical smells differently, we have no choice but to allow the people to kill the disease carrying mosquito’s accordingly. I believe that programs in our community like this one will continue to evolve and much program will be delivered. According to our barangay chairman a little help from a single individual could create the biggest impact when properly played religiously. Some teachers in our barangay would recommend this lesson in their class to be added as extra-curricular activity, and why not?
Positively enough, this program creates awareness on how important our role as individual to play our part in cleaning our surroundings. Unfortunately many individuals in our community still do not care about their disposal and how to segregate or even tie up their plastic garbage before throwing them on the street. Some people could not care less about their trashes. I believe the government still has more things to explore to create nationwide awareness in garbage collection. So that our nation will be clean and free from pollution.
