Born in Portland, Erick Spoelstra is a Filipino–American head coach of none other than the NBA’s Miami Heat League. Spoelstra is the son of Jon Spoelstra, a long time NBA executive. Erick Spoelstra is a grandson of Watson, a Detroit Tigers sports writer for many years. He is a professional athlete, basketball coach, basketball player and currently a head coach. Actually, coach Spoelstra is the first Asian/Filipino-American head coach in the North American basketball sports leagues and, because of his great talent and skills in basketball; he was recognized as the Jesuit High School Athletic Hall of Fame in September 2009. He has begun his head coaching career when the former president of Miami Heat gave up his position last April, 2008. After that, he was chosen as the next head coach of the team. He is the youngest head coach of the Miami league. Being a head coach, he has shown outstanding performances that led Miami to a 90-74 record during his first two seasons in the league. He even managed to take a 15-win team from the preceding season and led the team to 28-winnings. Erik Spoelstra has been really doing an excellent job as a head coach of the Miami League that he even marked the greatest best single-season improvement in the NBA history ever. More than that, under Spoelstra’s guidance and leadership, the MIAMI HEAT closed the season by winning 18 of its final 22 games that include the 12-3 record recently; which gave him an award as the “NBA Eastern Conference Coach of the Month”
On the other hand, Erik Spoeltra never forgets his other homeland Philippines. During two consecutive summer breaks; he came here in the Philippines together with the NBA and U.S. State Department to promote education and provide health and medical mission; as well as body wellness to huge number of Filipino youth.
