The Current Situation of the BPO Industry in the Philippines



Generally speaking, Philippines has been become the leading BPO industry in the world.  The country even surpassed India when it comes to outsource services.  As a matter of fact, nowadays, Philippines has been generating excellent outcome and performance on the projects from major countries in the globe such as United States, United Kingdom and Australia.  At the same time, the Philippine government is doing its efforts to prove that it really makes fruitful years in the BPO companies through Filipinos’ work efficiency, keen to details, quick grasp of technology, mastery of the English language and of course the pleasant work attitude.  In addition to that, various BPO companies in the country are doing continuous developments, excellent customer services and expansions in every part of the country to be able to meet the massive demands in the BPO industry.

Furthermore, many Filipino people are most capable of doing BPO jobs compared to other neighboring countries because of the outstanding traits that they have; that their clients would never find it from other Asian countries.  The Filipinos’ English proficiency and exceptional skill in adapting American accent easily are the remarkable factors why Philippines is currently considered as the number one  BPO  industry in the whole world.   More than that, English language is the primary medium of business communication that is being used in the country. Aside from that, the Filipinos are culturally inclined to watching Hollywood movies, TV shows and listening to American songs.   This is also the major reason that United States and other western countries are outsourcing their business to Philippines BPO companies.  These largest investors strongly believe that Filipinos are well equipped with the innovative skill and knowledge in specializing various back-office services, inbound and outbound sales, technical support and customer service jobs. In fact, the BPO industry in the country has been booming in the field of customer care, medical transcription, online English language teaching, software development, animation as well as shared services to huge clients in every part of the globe.    As a result, the Philippines has been receiving various major international awards and recognitions from varied Outsourcing Associations and organizations worldwide for its beyond-expectation performances in the business process outsourcing industry.

Moreover, there are international companies that outsource to BPO providers; and they include the financial leader WaMu Washington Mutual, Sallie Mae and Expedia.  All these companies are outsourcing to Aegis People Support.  On the other hand, QuickBooks developer Intuit   is outsourcing to Stream, and presently in partnership with e Telecare.    Whereas, Trans Union, Altel and MSN-Microsoft accounts are subcontracting Sykes.  In the same way, Bellsouth and AT&T accounts are outsourced by Convergys and many more leading BPO companies that operate in the Philippines. Relatively, the BPO Services Association Unlimited (BSA/U) was established  five years ago to combine the  common interests of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) providers such as call centers, contact centers, transcription, KPO, DPO, LPO, Animation, Graphics and Web, Engineering and CAD and Transcription service providers all throughout the country.  And, the objective and advocacy of this association is to support the BPO-related Philippine government programs and initiatives for the further promotional activities and service excellence among its BPO providers.  In the same manner, it aims to provide mutual benefits both for Overseas Clients and BPO companies.  Equally important to know that BSA/U has already 200 members and it is still increasing.  In this connection, the Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP) which was formed in 2001; and Business Process Association of the Philippines (BPA/P) which was organized in 2004 are both representing the BPO industry in the government policy level.
Correspondingly, the SME Agenda of the Department of Trade and Industry is doing its endless efforts to give its full support to the Philippine BPO industry.  Based on its official record, there is 99.6 % registered BPO firms nationwide that also employs 69.9 percent Filipinos; at the same fashion, it provides 32 percent revenues to the Philippine economy.  Presently, the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry here in the country is considerably called as the “sunshine industry” or a “Hollywood blockbuster movie”; because of its quick number multiplication of investment.  Most of these investments come from call center companies which comprises 70 percent of the entire BPO industry in the country.  In a recent study, the Philippines has been performing at a largest scale among its contemporaries.  And, nowadays, it is successfully producing more than 200 billion dollars profit.  It will grow bigger as the coming years according to the various business analysts.  I am very proud to say that Filipinos are globally competitive when it comes to excellent job performance.  And, no one can beat Filipinos when it comes to giving excellent customer service.
