Combatting Bad Behavior in Public

One of the more interesting videos last week showed a man publicly slapping an MMDA traffic enforcer after the latter stopped him for a traffic violation.  That incident would've just been a day in the work of that unfortunate MMDA enforcer but since a TV producer who just happened to be there when it happened took a video of the incident and posted it online - the resulting reaction forever changed the life of the aggressor.  That has been the case nowadays, with aggressors like Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago and Mr. Carabuena suffering instant public vilification because of what they did.

The public has taken the task of being judge and jury even if we don't really know the whole story or even if we don't really know the character of the aggressor - or that he or she may just have been having a bad day.  However, this should put anyone on his or her best behavior whenever they are in public, because nowadays, anyone and everyone has a handy camera phone and one's quiet life can be altered forever for some unfortunate display of bad behavior in public.

Absent forecaster: No money for bus fare

This is just unacceptable.  What the weatherman is doing is just passive resistance against an employer who is maltreating him.  And P-Noy still expects them to report to their hazardous jobs?  Pay them properly first Mr. President and they will do their jobs - typhoon or no typhoon!  The article even states that they actually just need around 6K per employee - just a drop in the bucket compared to what PNoy must be giving to congressmen or senators to force them to vote for the laws he wants passed.

‘100,000 slum folk must go’

The hard work to prevent flooding in Metro Manila starts now and once again, we target the most vulnerable group of all - our urban poor.  This would take a lot of political will to implement the eviction of these structures but the government has to explain properly to the inhabitants why it is dangerous to be living there in the first place.  A little monetary compensation should also be given since rental rates here in Manila are quite expensive, even in squatter areas.  I doubt if these people would move to the relocation sites.  Those are just too far from 'civilization'.

Bravo to the LRT and MRT

At the height of the torrential rains Tuesday night last week, my good friend Mark texted me and said he was going to work!  I texted back, saying 'Seriously?  Under these conditions?"  We were then in a brownout and our place was inundated by floods reaching up to waist height.  He said "Yeah, it's easy to go to work from where I am.  I just take the MRT."  And I said, "Wow, they are operational even under these conditions huh!"  And he added that in the BPO world, there is no such thing as 'bagyo, bagyo'.

And Mark did reach his office in Magallanes safe and fast (I'm not sure if he was dry though hehe).  So really, the MRT and LRT staff should be commended for being there even if only a few people rode them during those very wet days.

Going Back to Manual Counting Would Lead to More Cheating

I read an article today by Carmen Pedrosa where she warned that the use of the PCOS machine again in the coming elections next year will lead to elections anarchy.  I believe that if we return to manual counting, from a successful automated elections a few years back, would lead us to anarchy - election-wise - and also more work for our already tired teachers!

What she is insinuating then is that every single elected congressman, senator, vice-president and president from the past election may not have been elected by the people?  Really?  I actually think that if manual counting was used, it would give losing candidates enough time to 'doctor' the results and make them look like the winner.  But with the PCOS machines, the results come out in less than 24 hours in most urban centers and sets a trend - and shows who the people really voted for.  I don't think it's a perfect machine but the past election has shown that it can work.  So we should continue to use it - at least for the national elections!
