Labor Day Musings: Focus on the Productivity and the Salary will Follow

Our new mananahi was always very conscious about leaving at 6PM it irked Mama one time because the sewing machine repair man could only come after that time and the mananahi already wanted to leave because she said, she only had to work until 6PM.

With an attitude like that, do you think any employer would want to give an increase to an employee?  As Alberto said, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool capitalist but I also think of the employee's well-being - as long as what they contribute and their productivity helps the company.  The truth is, if the productivity is low and the employee is just their as a pabigat to the company, what's the use of giving a salary increase.  Madaling usapan ang salary increase as long as the employee puts also a lot into the company's growth.

Philippine Volcanoes Rugby Team: Not Just Your Ordinary Pin-Up Boys

Well, they almost stopped traffic in EDSA because of those oh-so-sexy underwear ads last year, but their victory last week against Sri Lanka in the Asian 5 Nations tilt, puts the Philippines among the top 5 Asian nations in rugby, and gives them the chance to compete in the Elite Division of the Asian 5 Nations in 2013.  That would give them the chance to qualify for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England.  Well, one step at a time!  Just like the Azkals, the rise of this team has been meteoric and I hope this time, no stupid broadcaster would scoff at them being half-Filipinos.  Why do we always enjoy pulling ourselves down?

As for me, I would love to see them play in the Hong Kong Sevens, the rugby tournament in Hong Kong every March.  That's one of the most fun athletic events in Hong Kong and it being so near Manila, we can finally have the chance to cheer for them!

If Mining Works For Chile, Why Can't it Work For Us

Being a beneficiary of mining myself, I join the group of Filipinos who believe that mining can seriously help uplift the poverty in our country.  One case study we can follow is that of Chile, whose mining industry has helped the country produce a burgeoning middle class - giving the country's economy a chance to grow.  Of course, the country has had its share of mining mishaps, the more recent was last year's recovery of trapped miners, but that hasn't deterred the country from continuing the mining operations in the country and the people don't see it as the enemy but as an ally.

I do hope we can also look at mining the same way Chile sees it.  The important thing there is that the profits of mining stays with us and does not largely go to the foreign companies who operate them. I am glad that Manny Pangilinan is backing this industry, knowing fully well how way ahead of the curve he is.  I am sure, he himself has studied this industry before putting his money in it.

I strongly believe that mining can be done without much hazard to the environment.  I remember doing a research study, as a Grade 7 student in Andres Soriano Memorial School - De La Salle, using mining tailings for construction materials.  That is one way of using the mining waste as something productive!

I guess the fear of our fellowmen lie mostly in the corruption of our Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the local governments that would lay host to these mining companies.  The people who are usually beholden to serve us, normally turn a blind eye when mining mishaps occur - that's why mining has been given such a bad rap.

Jay Michael Jaboneta: Social Entrepreneur

With guys like Jay Michael Jaboneta around, you'd know there is hope for the Philippines.  He's a young social entrepreneur who spearheaded the Yellow Boat Project where they provide these yellow boats to areas where school children need transport from their homes to their schools.  Before this project, would you believe these poor kids will have to swim across the sea just to go to school!  Because of the boats, many kids are now able to go to school.  How cool is that!

They have already helped kids in Zamboanga and Masbate.  Interestingly, his advocacy started with a Facebook post and look now where that led him!
